2016 will be remembered as the year the Private Cloud had a big reality check.
What started out with a bang, a few years back, looked more likely to end with a whimper. So what brought this potential multi-billion dollar industry to its feet?
Among the many contributing factors, here are what we believe were the top three.
Enterprise software is expensive. This is one of the main reasons why workloads are moving to the public cloud. Of course, some workloads cannot be moved to the public cloud, for various reasons – security being the prime candidate – but keeping those workloads inside the enterprise datacenter, while enabling them to benefit from cloud automation, needed very expensive software.
Products like the VMware vCloud and vRealize suites are powerful, but need an array of products and expensive and complicated professional services to deploy, configure and get your private cloud up and running. OpenStack is another option, but then the complexity (and cost) is all in the professional services needed to get your private cloud working. There are many OpenStack vendors on the market who claim to simplify the deployment process – but the reality leaves a lot to be desired. Cloud should be simple!
3. Vendor lock-in
No enterprise wants to be locked into a single vendor, or a single hypervisor technology – but current solutions for private cloud tend to force them down that path. What they’re really like is a private cloud solution that is more or less vendor agnostic.
So how do we solve those problems?
Over the last 6 or more years, OnApp has led the development of software for public cloud service providers, and during the many thousands of cloud deployments we’ve worked on with our customers, it’s become clear that a lot of our software capabilities were directly applicable to the private cloud use case too.
In fact, we saw that the OnApp cloud management platform not only met the private cloud use case, but had the potential to become a private cloud solution which addressed that enterprise angst about the cost, complexity and lock-in of existing private cloud solutions.
OnApp & Intel private cloud
We’ve been working with Intel for more than a year on various solutions, and together we realized that an OnApp private cloud solution, validated on specific Intel hardware systems, would provide enterprises with a new kind of “private cloud-in-a-box”. Now we’re taking a new joint solution to market that addresses those key private cloud pain points…
- A cloud-in-a-box solution at almost 1/4 the cost of competitive solutions
- A turnkey private cloud solution, which can be up and running in minutes
- A true multi-hypervisor/multi-cloud solution
Put simply, OnApp and Intel are making private cloud real again. 2016 was almost the RIP year for the private cloud. But that’s no longer the case. The private cloud has been resurrected…
