OnApp provides a huge array of metered data via the UI and API, and gives you comprehensive chargeback capabilities that are designed for vCloud service providers. With OnApp, you don’t need Chargeback Manager.
OnApp brings flexible company billing plans to vCloud Director, so you can charge for resource pools; multiple billing models, including contract-based, contract-with-burst and pay-as-you-grow; and control how billing plans and associated user groups are associated to Organizations.
OnApp enables fully customizable self-service for your vCloud Director clients. You can configure any mix of compute, storage and network resources and control exactly what each client can customize for themselves. Your customers can user OnApp to order, configure and manage their own environments without the need to talk to support.

OnApp Storage is a high-performance distributed SAN built into the OnApp cloud platform. It gives you fast, resilient and scalable storage for your cloud, without having to invest in proprietary SAN hardware, or compromise performance with a software SAN.
Built into your cloud
OnApp Storage creates an enterprise-class SAN across disks in your cloud’s compute nodes. It distributes data across those disks while giving you full control of replication and performance.
OnApp Storage is designed for cloud workloads, and scales naturally with your cloud as you grow. As you add compute nodes to your cloud your storage scales too – and you can add more disks whenever you need to, without having to rebuild the whole SAN.
You can provision storage and manage billing for multiple tiers of storage, just as you would with a traditional SAN – and use OnApp Storage instead of, or alongside, a traditional storage array.
No vendor lock-in
With OnApp Storage, there’s no vendor lock-in with supported disk types or custom network backplanes: you can use off-the-shelf servers, disks and network components.
Our unique VM-aware technology optimizes throughput, by ensuring that data resides on the same server as the application that needs it. This makes a dramatic difference to I/O performance and minimizes the storage network bandwidth required – increasing throughput for cloud workloads.
With our patent-pending smart disk technology, each physical disk in acts as a self-managing, self-discovering and self-contained unit, able to make decisions about data synchronization and load balancing without depending on a central controller. Disks are hot-pluggable between compute nodes, and there is no single point of failure.
OnApp Storage optimizes I/O throughput for your SAN and delivers close to raw disk performance. Each disk’s I/O queue is independent, so there is no single point where bandwidth bottlenecks can occur, and each storage node manages and compresses its own content in the most efficient way possible.
OnApp CDN is a global content delivery platform for service providers and enterprises. It includes an advanced CDN software stack and custom Anycast DNS service, that you can use to create public or private CDNs across your own infrastructure; create global public CDN services across the 170+ CDN PoPs on the OnApp Federation; or create a hybrid of both.
OnApp CDN integrates with the OnApp cloud platform, and is also available as a standalone product.

Flexible edge server deployment
With OnApp you can build and manage your own CDN, creating PoPs in your infrastructure for caching servers, storage servers, dynamic acceleration servers, live streaming or Video on Demand servers. OnApp CDN edge servers can be deployed on dedicated or virtual hardware.
Custom Anycast DNS and logic engine
OnApp CDNaaS (CDN as a Service) is the brains behind OnApp CDN. It combines information about a user’s location with the status and location of each server in the CDN, to find the best server to fulfil each content request. CDNaaS uses DNS routing to reduce the number of network hops required, which is much faster than traditional DNS configurations.
OnApp CDN supports Google DNS and Open DNS, and custom CNAME URLs.
With OnApp CDN you can easily set up unique reseller control panels with tailored access to your own PoPs and Federation PoPs, and their own user rights and pricing.
Broad protocol / file type support
OnApp CDN supports Push and Pull models for HTTP content; static and dynamic HTTP content caching at any location; Video on Demand via FLV, MP4, H.264/AAC content in containers, and for Adobe Flash, Apple Quick Time/iPhone/iPad/iPod platforms, Microsoft Silverlight, Android, Blackberry and other 3GPP platforms.
It also supports live streaming, enabled by Wowza Media Server, for Adobe RTMP/RTMPE/RTMPT; Android RTSP/RTP; Flash HDS; Apple HLS; and smooth streaming for Microsoft Silverlight.
Reporting and analytics
OnApp CDN includes a range of reports that help you and your customers understand how different content and locations are performing. You can display reports as graphs and tables and export as a CSV for further analysis. CDN statistics can be viewed by:
- CDN protocol type (HTTP Pull, Video on Demand etc)
- Data type (cached and non-cached)
- Specific edge servers and groups of edges
- Owner, country and time period
- Live streaming and concurrent live stream usage
- CPU usage per edge and storage server

OnApp CDN provides a number of features to protect your customers’ content and help them to implement their own content delivery policies.

Providing an effective disaster recovery service is essential for mission-critical workloads running in your cloud. OnApp DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service) brings affordable, high-performance real-time DR to public and private cloud services, for the first time.
Constant Data Protection (CDP)
OnApp DRaaS goes far beyond simple snapshot-based DR services. You can offer real-time protection for virtual servers in your cloud, and create high performance Disaster Recovery services with zero data loss guaranteed for most workloads.
When DRaaS is activated for a virtual server, the server is replicated in real-time to a remote DR site, and remains in sync while DRaaS is enabled for that server. OnApp DRaaS integrates seamlessly with OnApp clouds, and has no impact on virtual server performance. It activates with a single click, and is fully integrated with OnApp billing systems.
Public and Private DR support
OnApp DRaaS replicates data in real time between a source cloud and one or more replication cloud sites – either as a fully managed service, or a DR service you manage yourself:
- Public DRaaS: we provide and manage a selection of remote replication sites that you can choose from to protect your cloud.
- Private DRaaS: if you have multiple datacenters, you can set up a private DR service where you manage the replication sites.
Flexible DR configuration
You can enable OnApp DRaaS for some or all of the hypervisor zones in your cloud, and choose different replication targets for each zone. For example, you can replicate to a geographically distant location for greater protection against local outages. Or replicate to a nearby location if, for example, there’s a requirement to keep data within a specific jurisdiction.
Industry-leading RPOs and RTOs
OnApp DRaaS is based on OnApp Storage, the distributed SAN built into the OnApp platform. By using inline data write intercepts, and removing remote write latency, it delivers exceptional DR performance for a wide range of workloads:
- RPO – Recovery Point Objective – measures how up-to-date replicated data is. OnApp DRaaS has an RPO so low that you can guarantee zero data loss for the majority of workloads.
- RTO – Recovery Time Objective – measures the time taken for an application to start running again after a failure. OnApp DRaaS has an RTO of less than 5 minutes for most virtual servers.
Low cost, high performance
Real-time data protection is normally affordable only to businesses who can run multiple redundant clouds connected by expensive dedicated fiber links. OnApp DRaaS introduces real-time protection without the cost, using commodity cloud infrastructure and the integrated/distributed SAN technology built into the OnApp platform.
Security, monitoring & alerts
OnApp DRaaS monitors uptime for each cloud that has disaster recovery enabled. If a problem is detected, it actively probes to see if any DRaaS-enabled virtual servers are down, and generates alerts for the cloud provider (or their customer) to begin the failover process. OnApp DRaaS uses public/private key authorization, and fully encrypts all DR data.
OnApp Application Servers
Application Servers are an add-on to the OnApp Cloud platform. They give your customers and users instant access to a library of hundreds of SaaS and PaaS applications, which deploy in your cloud in a couple of clicks – including their databases – and are managed just like virtual servers.
Hundreds of dynamic apps
Why should your users have to install applications manually, or spend time keeping them up to date? With Application Servers, they can install applications automatically along with a virtual server. Apps are installed from a central repository, up to date with the latest features and security patches.
Huge SaaS and PaaS library
You can offer a huge library of application stacks based on Perl, PHP, Python, Java, and JS, including popular apps like Drupal, Joomla, WordPress and Magento, as well as many other tools for CRM, database management, comms, media, blogging, productivity, development and e-commerce.
Simple application management
By deploying applications directly to OnApp virtual servers, each application, and its associated databases, benefit from the automated provisioning, backup, restore and other features of the OnApp cloud platform. Domains, email accounts, FTP and users can also be managed through the OnApp UI.
Move up the stack
Application Servers help you deliver what customers really need from your cloud: a simple, powerful way to host workloads. You can sell fully hosted, fully automated PaaS and SaaS in the same UI your customers use for cloud, bare metal, CDN, storage and DR.
OnApp Container Servers
OnApp Container Servers give you a framework for Docker containers to be deployed in your cloud. Container Servers are based on a CoreOS template. They give you all of the intuitive provisioning and management of standard OnApp virtual servers, but with the tools to enable your clients to run Docker and Kubernetes.
Container Servers also provide full customization via CoreOS Cloud-Config, through the OnApp UI. They’re our first step towards a much more intuitive, easier to manage implementation of cloud hosted Docker – available in OnApp v5.1 and later.
Container Server use cases
Docker simplifies DevOps and supports continuous integration/continuous deployment methodologies; now you can bring these benefits to your clients and users through your OnApp cloud. It’s especially popular among developers, for whom Docker simplifies the process of developing, shipping and running applications across multiple platforms.
Docker also provides a way to consolidate applications into a single container – so for example, you can run multiple applications (e.g. WordPress) with a central database. Conversely, Docker containers can also simplify deployment and management of applications across compute clusters.
One pane of glass – any virtual appliance
Container Servers are one of many virtual appliances supported in the OnApp cloud platform. Through a ‘single pane of glass’ control panel, you can use OnApp to sell, provision and manage containers alongside virtual servers, CDN, storage, backup, disaster recovery, bare metal and more – and bring in EC2 instances as well.
Container Servers & Kubernetes
OnApp provides all the tools needed to run Kubernetes as part of the CoreOS template used in Container Servers. Kubernetes is an open source system for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerized applications. The combination of OnApp Container Servers and Kubernetes delivers a truly scalable and resilient Docker management environment, as a seamless part of your OnApp cloud.
OnApp Accelerator is an add-on to the OnApp Cloud platform. With a single click, it automatically accelerates web applications running in your cloud by optimizing pages, scripts and images, and publishing them automatically to our global CDN, using 19 locations from the OnApp Federation.

Performance is everything for web applications hosted in your cloud. OnApp Accelerator improves performance up to 100% without having to deploy and manage a full-blown CDN.
No config or recoding
OnApp Accelerator is an instant, hands-free web acceleration solution. No recoding, no DNS or CNAME changes – just a single click. The content delivery network, and the OnApp Accelerator service, are fully managed by OnApp.
Patent-pending acceleration method
Using a patent-pending content acceleration method, OnApp Accelerator automatically compresses, minifies and cdnifies web content running on virtual servers (html, png, gif, jpeg, webp, css and js files) – then distributes it to 19 locations across the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific.
